About the Randall RT50H Guitar Amplifier Head (50 Watts)
The new Randall RT Series is an extremely flexible, all tube group of 50 and 100 watt guitar amplifiers offering a range of tones from clean Country & Jazz to Full Metal/Shred. Randall RT50H Guitar Amplifier Head (50 Watts) Reviews
This is going to be a negative review, so fair warning! I have not had good experiences with this product. First of all, let's start with the good stuff: Tone: The amp does produce a very smooth, even tone. The quality of the amplified signal was excellent--no hissing or popping. Very clean and warm. Construction: The amp seems to be well built. The front grill and rear cross-member are easily removed to gain good access to the tubes. Also, it is a big bonus to be able to bias your own tubes easily through the test points on the back of the unit. (This was one of the attractive features.) Amp Output: I typically run my signal through a stompbox for all effects and distortion, then out to the clean channel on my amp. The clean channel on this amp, however, is very quiet. I have both a 120W solid state amp and a 33W tube amp head that both COMPLETELY blow this thing away. With the Master Volume, Level, and Gain on the Randall's clean channel cranked up to max, I can overtake it with my solid state at 50% volume. That's terrible. Seriously, if my drummer were playing along with me, he could easily drown me out. Randall Support: I suspected this low sound output level may be a defect in the amp, so I tried to contact Randall. I sent them an e-mail--no response. I then called and left a voice mail for their tech support--again, no response. Seriously? Is this how Randall stands behind its products??? Returned: I called ZZOUNDS and explained the low output to the rep, who also believed the unit to be defective, so he arranged for a replacement. I received the replacement, but it is exactly the same. I am returning this thing immediately! Conclusion: I have some experience with tube amps, but not a ton. I asked around to several different people in local music shops and also other musicians, and they all agreed that a 50W tube amp should be LOUD. My only conclusion can be that this thing is just designed this way. The only ways I can see this thing being adequate would be to use it for mic'd recording (where the low volume is not such an issue) or if you only played through the gain channel (which is sufficiently loud, though a bit muddy at times). I do not recommend this amp. In fact, considering the COMPLETE lack of response I got from Randall, I would recommend staying away from this manufacturer entirely.
